Thanh Oai House

Thanh Oai House is a two-storey family home set in a large garden in Thanh Oai, Hanoi. It recalls the traditional houses of northern Vietnam, with layered red tile roofs, white walls and warm timber railings and louvres, sitting lightly on a green lawn surrounded by colourful planting.

The ground floor opens to the garden through large glass panels and a deep veranda. Living room, dining room and kitchen flow together, with a slender timber staircase leading upstairs. The upper floor is set back to create a wrap-around timber gallery and balcony, shading the rooms below and offering a place to sit and watch the garden in the evening.

The upstairs bedrooms sit beneath pitched roofs with exposed timber rafters, ceiling fans and sheer curtains, giving them a tall, airy feel. Dark timber, grey-blue fabrics and white walls make up the interior palette, while built-in wardrobes, shelves and desks keep each room calm and uncluttered.

Thanh Oai House is a place for the family to slow down and live close to nature, with its tiled roofs and garden shaping the rhythm of everyday life.
