Hoa Long House

Hoa Long House is a garden house designed by H+ Studio in 2023 on a sloping site among coconut palms and bamboo. The house is raised on a base of dry-laid rubble stone that holds the carport and entrance; above, a broad, steep red tile roof shelters open living spaces that look out over the garden and the palms.

The structure is a slender black steel frame carrying timber rafters and a terracotta tile roof left exposed inside. The walls are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels opening onto wide concrete verandas with fine steel railings, letting breezes and daylight pass straight through. In contrast to the warm roof, a long grey brick wall acts as a spine that shelters and shapes the spaces.

At the heart of the house are the kitchen and a long dining table beside a striking earth-red wall and a suspended timber wine rack. The living room has a brown leather sofa, a Barcelona chair and a vertical timber cabinet holding the TV, topped with plants that catch light from a roof opening. An outdoor timber deck with a long table and a round pond becomes the family's gathering place in the garden.

The bedrooms open onto verandas and the garden through large glass walls, with timber beds, vertical timber panelling and ceiling fans. A semi-outdoor bathroom with stone walls, plants and a skylight, and an outdoor shower with a round stone plunge pool beneath a tree, complete the house.

The project was designed in 2023 and has not yet been built.
